West District Cross Country Championships

A proper old fashioned cross country course awaited those who made their way to Greenock for the second biggest cross country of the year.

Jessica Hagan represented the club in the under 13 girls race coming home in 58th place. Aidan Gilbride and Martin Lynas competed strongly at the front of the field in the under 15 boys race over a nice and muddy 4k, finishing 6th and 15th. Aidan guaranteed his place in the West team for the Inter Districts Cross Country in January - he will have plenty of support that day! - while Martin just missed out on the elusive top 12 but still has another year in this age group.

The men had 10km of fun seperating them and the finish line and John Fergusson made it back in 22nd place in a race won by the two time Scottish Cross Country Champion. Niall Walker put in a strong performance to finish 36th as did David Thomson in 113th.

Although there were some good performances, the overall turnout was not good enough for such a big event. After a promising start to the cross country season, everyone should make the effort to attend races and put all that hard work in training to good use! WE NEED TO GET EVERYONE COMPETING AT THE NATIONALS IN FEBRUARY!!!

 Club Ceilidh and Annual Awards

Big shout to everyone who attended the EKAC ceilidh and awards night last weekend, it looked as though everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves! On the night the two biggest club accolades of the year were awarded as the Athlete of the Year Trophy and the Scott Walsh Endeavour Award were presented.

Athlete of the Year for 2012 went to Aiden Gilbride, the under 15 startlet who, after a storming track season, backed up his credentials by winning the Lanarkshire Cross Country title earlier that day. For the first time there were joint winners of the Scott Walsh Endeavour Award as Niall Walker and Martin Lynas proved inseperable in the votes. Both are fully deserving of such an award having shown great commitment to training in the last 12 months, or in Niall's case for the best part of a decade!

As if the Canadian Barn Dance wasn't enough of a workout, many athletes had successfully competed at the Lanarkshire Cross Country Championships earlier that day. Special mention must go to the senior mens team of Grant Baillie, Jamie Clements and Niall Walker who brought home Team Gold medals! A successful start to the winter and exciting times lie ahead!
